Naggo Head take the lead
published: Saturday | May 27, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

NAGGO HEAD hold a narrow 33-27 lead over defending champions Spanish Town heading into today's final day of the Insports/Swizzle Primary Schools Athletic Champion-ships at the National Stadium.

Rounding out the top five overall are St. Benedicts 16, Waterford 12 and Excelsior on seven.

Today's action, which begins at 10 a.m., will see some 30 finals.

After two finals yesterday the boys' high jump open and the girls' long jump open Naggo Head Primary lead the boys section on 21 points, eight ahead of Spanish Town on 13, Waterford 12 , St. Benedicts 11 and Excelsior on seven points. In the boys high jump, Darran Hunter notched top place for Waterford with a leap of 1.50m ahead of Naggo Head's Damar robinson, 1.45m and Spanish Town's Warren Reddie, who leapt 1.40m.

SP TOWN PRIMARY HOLD ADVANTAGE

In the girls' section, Spanish Town Primary hold the advantage with 14 points, narrowly ahead of Naggo Head 12, Angels nine, Dunrobin seven and St. Patricks six. In the day's other final, the girls long jump open, Shaulene Prince leapt 4.78m to win for Spanish Town, Danasha Powell was second with 4.45m for Naggo Head and St. Patrick's Shantena Douglas placed third with 4.44m.

Despite the slight advantage, Naggo Head coach Floyd Coke believes things could have been better.

"We have had a bit of misfortune between Thursday and yesterday, injuries kept us from making a couple more finals," he said. "We are not where we want to be, we have a chance. Spanish Town are in more relays than us, we just might be able to pull it off, if it comes down to the last event the 4x200m boys, I think we can pull it off."

Meanwhile, Spanish Town's technical director Suzanne Haynes-Waite remains confident.

"It's normally that way but on the last day we always manage to pull through. Thursday we had some disappointments but yesterday was good," she said.

"We have no doubt that we will be able to defend our title, we've always been a confident team. she added.
