THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN THE recent Budget presenta-tion in Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition, Bruce Golding suggested to the Government that the threshold for government pensioners be lifted from its present level to one million dollars per annum, to ease the burden from 'PAYE' income tax.
The government pensioners were eagerly awaiting the reply from either the Prime Minister or the Finance Minister on the Opposition's suggestion during their budget presentations and the closing of the budget debate.
To our dismay, nothing has been said by the Prime Minister or her Finance Minister on the subject.
What are the pensioners to assume from their silence; are they consenting or not? The government pensioners are struggling to cope with the mounting inflationary pressures, especially those who have retired from 1991 and beyond.
We are left to compete with the salaried public sector worker, who is in receipt of a hardship allowance alongside their salary.
The time to act is now.
I am, etc.,
