Normative scandals
published: Monday | May 29, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

NEWS THAT Mayor Desmond McKenzie has been ratified in his position is disappointing, but comes as no surprise. Disappointing because there was hope of something new and different in the politics of this country. Not surprising because I always suspected that at the end of the day, there would be no real difference.

The Contractor General reveals irregularities, the Mayors of Kingston and Portmore plead mea culpa "forgive us". Then all is forgiven and as a country we roll right along.

In my view, Audley Shaw should save his breath and reveal no more 'PNP' scandals, because a scandal is not scandalous if it is normative.

And what of Karl Blythe the minister who resigned but was not forgiven?

The Contractor General's reports, like those of the Auditor General, will become so much more paper to be filed away.

I am, etc.,

DAVID G. BATTS

Kingston
