ST LUCIA: Cuba to train St Lucians in nursing
published: Tuesday | May 30, 2006

ANTHONY

CASTRIES, ST LUCIA (CMC):

The St Lucia Government yesterday said more than 300 nationals would receive training in basic nursing in Cuba.

An official statement said the offer to train the St. Lucians in Havana is as a result of the five-day official visit paid to that country by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony at the invitation of President Fidel Castro last week.

It said during talks with Castro, the St. Lucia Prime Minister "reported on the measures taken by government to improve the health sector including the construction of major modern health facilities and the extensive programme of refurbishing of health centres islandwide.

"Having regard to the numerous pressures on the existing pool of nurses through migration, President Castro agreed to accept three hundred young Saint Lucians to pursue nursing training at institutions in Cuba," the statement said.
