Women's fault? I think not!
published: Wednesday | May 31, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN A letter to The Gleaner published on May 27, writer P. Logan represents well, those persons who find it convenient to blame women for ALL the ills of the world.

P. Logan quotes that 'behind great men stand great women' and then goes on to suggest that 'behind terrible men stand terrible women.'

Mr. Logan seems trapped in a time warp where 'woman' is that brainless creature walking a few steps behind a man, awaiting instructions on where, when and how high to jump, nodding mindlessly in agreement with everything said or done by the man behind whom she finds herself.

Over time, intelligent men and women came to realise that women do have a brain and, therefore, could contribute positively to their society on various levels. Many men were upset by this revelation and became actively resentful. Because they were intimidated by this new woman, they felt threatened.

No confident, open-minded, liberated man in Jamaica or elsewhere finds himself in the above-mentioned category.

P. Logan should open his eyes and recognise the fact that Jamaica would be in a far worse position today were it not for the strong, hard-working, determined women from all socio-economic groups who single-handedly took on the job of caring for the family, since the men behind whom they should be standing had disappeared as soon as responsibility reared its head. In Jamaica some wonderful rockings of the cradle took place; just look at some of our great men and women who were products of single mothers.

I am, etc.,

SONIA KING

Kingston
