WORLD JUNIOR 200 metre record holder Usain Bolt was the lone Jamaican winner at yesterday's Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Bolt ran 20.28 seconds to outclass a good field which included American Bernard Williams, Commonwealth Games champion Omar Brown and World Championships 100m gold medallist Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis, to win in a new meet record.
The 19-year-old rewrote the old mark of 20.30 set by world sprint double champion Justin Gatlin.
Bolt was happy with his performance.
"I am very happy to compete here in Ostrava and to run a good race," Bolt said.
"I did not know the meet record belonged to Justin Gatlin. But I am happy to have a meet record in Europe," he said after the race.
"This year I want to run as much as possible all around Europe and the Caribbean. My goal for this year is to mainly gain race experience. Next year I will run mainly the 200m but also the 400m at some meetings. My coach (Glen Mills) would like me to race the 200m and 400m in 2008. I think the 400m will be a good race for me," he said.
TRAINING PARTNER
Williams was second in 20.61 seconds while Brown finished third in 20.63. Collins, Bolt's training partner at the Mills-coached Racers Track Club, who is just returning from injury was last in 21.53.
Jamaica's 110m hurdles record holder Maurice Wignall was fifth in his event in 13.43 seconds. American Terrence Trammell won in 13.19 ahead of Latvia's Stanislavs Olijars (13.34).
National champion Kemel Thompson was fifth in the men's 400m hurdles. Thompson was timed in 49.92 seconds to finish behind winner American Bershawn Jackson (48.76).
Jamaicans Lacena Golding-Clarke and World Champion-ships silver medallist Delloreen Ennis-London had a poor outing in the women's 100m hurdles.
Golding-Clarke was fourth in 12.87 while Ennis-London finished fifth in 12.92. LoLo Jones of America won the event in 12.71 seconds ahead of compatriot Danielle Carruthers (12.83).
Olivia McKoy, another national champion, was sixth in the javelin event with a throw of 48.83.
