Jamaica Public Service (JPS) head moves on
published: Thursday | June 1, 2006

Damion Mitchell, News Coordinator

MATTHEWS

CHARLES MATTHEWS, the chief executive officer of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS), is leaving that position.

Mr. Matthews, whose contract expired yesterday, has opted against an extension.

Mr. Matthews who is from Macon, Georgia, was appointed to head JPS five years ago by its parent company Mirant Corporation, following the divestment of the local power company. Mirant is a multi-national publicly listed power provider.

Contacted yesterday Mr. Matthews would only say an announcement regarding his future with the company would be made today but sources close to him say he has accepted a post outside of the Mirant Corporation.

However it's expected that Mr. Matthews' new job will result in his visiting Jamaica regularly.

JPS sources have also said Mr. Matthews' successor will be recruited from overseas.

However a local succession plan is to be considered at the light and power company.

It is also reported that the immediate successor will continue to implement the changes Mr. Matthews had started at JPS.

Earlier this month, Mr. Matthews told The Gleaner in The Monday Interview that he was pleased with the improvements JPS had made over the last five years.

"I am very comfortable here and comfortable with where JPS is now," he said. "I feel good about what it is now."
