SSP Adams needs to clean up his act
published: Thursday | June 1, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE REINSTATEMENT of Senior Superintendent of police Reneto Adams, the most popular member of the JCF, to active front line duty should not be based on public sentiment but, rather, on whether or not he is willing to change certain aspects of his attitude.

His attitude in the past has been one of brashness and arrogance. His past public criticisms of former commissioner of police, Francis Forbes, showed a blatant disrespect for authority. SSP Adams needs to limit his presence in the limelight and, instead, focus on doing his job effectively and lawfully. He needs to lead by example.

CONTROVERSY

Controversy seems to follow SSP Adams wherever he goes so he must make a distinct effort to think carefully before he acts, particularly whenever he spear-heads operations/missions within inner-city communities. SSP Adams must carry out his duties in a professional manner, at all times - not only when it suits him. He must also come to the realisation that, in seeking to apprehend criminal suspects, the end does not always justify the means.

SSP Adams must accept that every citizen of Jamaica is entitled to due process and must be regarded as innocent until proven guilty (in a court of law). After all, he himself enjoyed that privilege prior to and throughout his own trial.

I am, etc.,
