Please lead us by example

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I READ with interest The Gleaner article 'Gun ban proposal for Clarendon PC meetings', published on May 27, 2006. It leads me to wonder that if Mayor Brown is concerned about safety at meetings from councillors carrying guns, then what about the safety of the public?
If our parish councillors can't have meetings with their peers and equals without their feeling threatened by the presence of licensed firearms, should we, the public, feel safe in their presence? The article brought a chill to my body and made feel threatened by politicians with guns!
I am also puzzled as to why a politician can justify having a gun license for security and citizens that live in gun embattled communities cannot own them freely. Therefore, I wish to make a humble call to our leaders: please lead us by example! Since the society in general is not to be armed with guns, then disarm yourselves and if you cannot disarm yourselves then arm us as well.
I am, etc.,
