THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON THE morning of May 29, a list of doctors certified to practise medicine in the period January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006, in Jamaica, appeared in The Gleaner. Unfortunately, my name was absent.
Following is the history of my registration. The Medical Council of Jamaica received my required fee and copies of my continuing medical education certificates on or before December 15, 2005 and proceeded to send me a certificate with the valid dates January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005.
I immediately called the office and was told a new certificate would be issued. After several weeks I called again and was told another certificate would be issued. I received the certificate in early March 2006, with the valid dates now January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006. I was so shocked to see that my name did not appear on the list of May 26. The implication to me was that I have not compiled with the requirements of the law.
I called the office of the Medical Council on the morning of May 29 and was told that another list would appear later ... and this was accompanied by laughter. The Gleaner of May 30, 2006, is now carrying a very prominent article that a large number of doctors have not yet been certified to practise.
I would like to end by asking how many doctors have been made to suffer this humiliation and to say that power in Jamaica seems riddled with inaccuracies.
I am, etc.,
