THE ST. Catherine STD and HIV Secretariat has successfully concluded its third annual Primary School HIV/AIDS quiz competition.
Sixteen primary schools from four zones in the parish entered this year's competition and at the finals held at Cecil's Restaurant in Spanish Town, Ascot Primary emerged the winner over Spanish Town Primary School.
EDUCATIONAL AIM
According to Dale Walker of the St. Catherine Health Services, the aim of the competition was to educate children at the primary school age about the impact of HIV/AIDS.
It also sought to educate them on high values and attitudes, family planning, growth and self-identity as they move into the secondary school setting.
"The children are warming to the effort of the health services. When we started three years ago, only four schools participated, this year we have 16 schools and this shows us that it is reaping success," the communications officer said.
Last year, the competition was won by Sergeantville Primary in rural St. Catherine. St. Catherine Primary won the inaugural competition.
