Competitive line-up for Appleton Masters Classic
published: Saturday | June 3, 2006

Tym Glaser, Associate Editor - Sport

MORE THAN a dozen of Jamaica's national trialists for the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) will be in action this weekend at the popular Appleton Masters Classic at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.

With the final CAGC team being selected at the end of this month for the August event at Cinnamon Hill, Rose Hall, the island's potential representatives will be looking for a good showing over the two days to push their claims.

Talented youngster Fabian Campbell and Michael Scott, who both have already qualified for the Hoerman Cup team, lead a strong men's section which also includes fellow squad members Narada Black, Xavier Rose and Carl Bruce.

Jodi Barrow, also an automatic CAGC qualifier, looks a lock to win the women's section of the Classic but much attention will focus on the performances of Leiza Blakeley and teenager Tiffany Terrier who are battling for places on the three-women George Teale Trophy team with Maggie Lyn and, possibly, US-based Diane Lang.

Lincoln Williams, George Hugh and Fred Sutherland will battle it out for bragging rights in the men's Senior section and a possible place alongside John Smith at the CAGC.

Dennis Atkinson should cruise home in the men's Super Senior classification this weekend. That section's representatives for the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean's top amateur golf event have already been chosen: Atkinson and Harris Johnson.
