Knights, Slayers tip off title duel
published: Saturday | June 3, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

RIVALS URBAN Knights and St. George's Slayers will square off in game one of the best of three KFC/bmobile National Basketball League (NBL) final at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) at 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Two years ago it was the Urban Knights who prevailed in three games in a closely contested series over the Slayers for their first title. But last season in the semi-finals it was the Slayers who came out on top, getting by the Knights in three games en route to their first title.

"Today's game one will be very important. For the last couple of games we have been playing from behind and we need to shake off that habit," said Slayers' coach Winston Harvey.

It has been the Knights who have certainly had the easier route to the finals and after racking up an impressive 19-3 regular season record, went on to sweep both the Portmore Flames and Tivoli Gardens All-Stars.

The defending champions on the other hand, have had to battle all season. They finished second with a 17-5 record, but did not overtake Denham Town Wizards until the final day of the regular season. They then had to come from behind in both play-off series against the Link Up All Stars and Denham Town.

"We don't have anything to lose, they are the champs, so we're going into today's game business as usual. We know each other inside out and I expect it to be a good series," said Knights assistant coach Maurice Gordon.
