PNP row goes before Affairs Commission

A SPAT between two senior members of the People's National Party in the Western St. Thomas constituency is now before the party's Internal Affairs Commission, says general secretary Colin Campbell.

Mr. Campbell spoke with The Sunday Gleaner late Friday, shortly after he met with disgruntled delegates from Western St. Thomas who marched on the PNP's Old Hope Road headquarters. They demanded that councillor Rosemarie Shaw, caretaker for the constituency, be reinstated or they would not be voting for the PNP in the next general elections.

Ms. Shaw handed in her resignation last week following a reported clash with another PNP member, Jennifer Edwards, at a polling station in the town of Bath.

"They (demonstrators) were not clear on certain things, so I met with everyone and everything has been cleared up," said Mr. Campbell.

FEUDING FACTIONS

Mr. Campbell played down talk that several feuding factions have developed within the PNP since the presidential elections in February which was won by current Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

Ms. Shaw, a former member of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party, said last week that she had been disrespected by Ms. Edwards because she supported Dr. Peter Phillips in the president's race. Ms. Edwards was part of Mrs. Simpson Miller's campaign team.

The Western St. Thomas seat is one of several constituencies where the PNP has yet to select a candidate for general elections, which some political watchers predict will be called this year.

Three constituency polls are scheduled for today. In Central St. Mary, sitting Member of Parliament, Dr. Morais Guy, will be opposed by Senator Floyd Morris and Hurley Taylor.

In South Manchester, Wentworth Skeffery will look to replace MP and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Michael Peart. That poll had initially been scheduled for May 28.

In nearby North Central Clarendon, Dr. Neil McGill and former MP George Lyn are the candidates. Dr. McGill is currently MP for Western St. Mary.
