Naggo Head seal NPL spot
published: Monday | June 5, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

NAGGO HEAD carved out a 1-0 win over Negril FC and a spot in next season's Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) yesterday at the Ferdie Neita Park.

Naggo Head join fellow first-time qualifier August Town as the two promoted teams.

One of the biggest crowds seen at the Ferdie Neita Park, the home of Portmore United, witnessed a 45th-minute goal from Harvel Watson that was enough to push the St. Catherine-based Naggo Head into the Premier League.

In the other encounter, St. George's FC blanked August Town 2-0 with Richard Knibbs and David Taylor scoring in the 59th and 68th minutes respectively.

However, August Town out of the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA), finished atop the four team standings with 10 points.

Naggo Head, the South Central Confed representative, finished second on nine points, with Negril FC, the Western Confederation champion on seven, and St. George's, the Eastern Confederation winner on six points.

In fact, the two teams that gained promotion to the NPL came from the same confedera-tions of the relegated teams, Rivoli and Constant Spring.

Rivoli out of St. Catherine represented South Central Confederation while Constant Spring carried the KSAFA banner for years.

A very elated Harold Thomas, coach of Naggo Head, said the community deserved to be in the NPL.

"This one is dedicated to the community. The community is happy. It is a football-loving community for many years. They have struggled a long time and I am just happy for them," said Thomas, as spectators pranced and danced while lifting their local heroes shoulder high.

"This is a young and talented team and the biggest problem was the mental one, the discipline and to get them to train hard. Hopefully these things will improve as we go into next season," said Thomas, who apart from coaching the relegated Rivoli earlier last season, also coached that team to NPL promotion.

Meanwhile, Jerome Waite, coach of the Westmoreland outfit Negril FC, said his team tried hard.

"What I had to work with is not so much of any level in terms of quality. Technically, they are weak and all in all they did good, but it wasn't enough," said Waite, who also coached Arnett Gardens during last season.
