Cemetery meeting abandoned
published: Wednesday | June 7, 2006

LUCEA, Hanover:

The Hanover Parish Council's Planning and Environment Committee meeting was abandoned yesterday because there was no quorum.

The meeting was called to discuss concerns of citizens of the Burnt Ground community, relating to a cemetery being built in the area by the Delapenha Funeral Home.

However, only community representatives and two of the seven councillors, Audley Gilpin of the Lucea Division and Lloyd Hill of the Sandy Bay Division, showed up for the meeting, which required the presence of at least three councillors to legally get under way.

The citizens had accused the parish council of playing a role in the approval of the plans for the construction of the cemetery which they claimed would contaminate the underground water resources in the area.
