Alternative fuels and Jamaica
published: Wednesday | June 7, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I APPLAUD Jamaica for looking to alternative fuels for great sustainability.

Although total self-sustainability is unrealistic in the short term, there is great potential for positive economic impact from domestic alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. The additional factor that is rarely discussed in the press is conservation. Most do not realise that island nations typically rely on petroleum products for its energy production. Some are looking toward wind power and solar power to offer additional renewable energy, but the real change is in renewable fuels in conjunction with conservation.

With conservation and the economic impact the renewable fuels have on your trade imbalance, the Government should look diligently at the economics of financially supporting domestic alternative fuels production.

I am, etc.,
