JAMALCO CAPTURED the second Berger Paint Super League final 54-40 over Tivoli Gardens A to win the best-of-three series 2-0 at the National Indoor Centre on Monday night.
National goalshooter Remaldo Aiken was unstoppable scoring 50 points from 55 attempts in leading Jamalco to the $120,000 winning prize.
Last Thursday, the defending champions won game one 51-48 to take a 1-0 lead and were rarely troubled in game two, surrendering the lead only once - in the second quarter.
The green and white-clad Jamalco had quarterly leads of 12-9, 28-18 and 42-29 before winning comfortably 54-40.
For Tivoli Gardens A, who gained $80,000 for their runners-up spot, goalshooter Cleopatra Grant top-scored with 38 points from 48 attempts.
Waulgrovians A secured third spot and $42,000 with an easy 64-35 win over Tivoli Gardens B in the curtain-raiser.
National player Simone Forbes, playing at goal attack, scored 28 from 30 attempts and was complemented by goalshooter Suzette Desouza, with 20 from 23 attempts, and Oberon Pitterson, 16 from 19 attempts. For Tivoli B, Nerissa Gibbs scored 24 from 26 attempts for the orange and black-clad west Kingstoners.
HAPPY COACH
Super League winning coach Winston Nevers was a happy man but did not expect victory to be so easy.
"Over the past couple of games we had been having some close matches with this Tivoli team and I didn't expect to win this big," Nevers said. "We wanted to get away from Tivoli early because they were so close in the first game and we decided we needed this game, we didn't want it to go to a third game.
Meanwhile, Sylvester Campbell, coach of Tivoli A, said his team performed badly on the wrong day.
"For some reason we had a bad start today. At the end of the first quarter we pulled it down to two and then it just went away. There were turnovers, the shooting was off ... it was just a bad day on the wrong day," said Campbell.
Nadine Bryan of Waulgrovians A was voted the Most Valuable Player, and Jamalco's Romelda Aiken the Most Accurate Shooter.
