Pagon gets series campaign off to flying start
published: Wednesday | June 7, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

TOP SEED Dwayne Pagon picked up where he left off by winning the men's Class One division of the Llockett McGregor Amateur Championships, the opening tournament in the Trafalgar Travel Amateur Tennis Series at the Liguanea Club on Sunday.

Pagon, who won the top prize last year - a trip to the 2006 Nasdaq Open in Florida - got off to another solid start when he turned back Christopher Lawson 6-2, 7-5 in the final.

The victory not only saw Pagon wrap up 100 points and an early lead in the Class One division but also win a weekend for two at Couples Swept Away Negril.

However, while Pagon got off to a good start, the same could not be said for last year's other winners as there were only first-time winners in the tournament's other three categories.

VETERAN ACTION

Leevan Reid, who got by number two seed, Carl Blissett to reach the Class Two final, beat Mark Edwards 6-4, 6-3 to wrap up that section.

In men's Class Three action, veteran Ruddy Chin overcame top seed Marlon Brown fairly comfortably with a 6-1, 6-4 victory, in a one-versus-two final match-up. Chin also won a weekend trip for two to any Sandals resort in Jamaica.

Class Four play saw Warrenton Dixon wen the event in straight sets - beating Franklyn Grenion 6-4, 6-2.

Dixon knocked out number two seed Clive Smith in the quarter-finals, while the category's top seed, Nelton Forsythe, withdrew from tournament.

This year's first tournament in the series did not have a women's open category due to a lack of entries.

The series is expected to continue with the second tournament next month.
