'Dedication' helps Eltham retain title
published: Wednesday | June 7, 2006

ELTHAM'S COACH, Oral Simpson, put down his team's success to "dedication" after it won the final of the Grace Under-16 competition against Vere Technical last week.

"The dedication and commitment of the boys was what carried them through," Simpson said after his team's 80-run win over Vere at Melbourne Oval on Friday.

Replying to Eltham's 288, Vere were dismissed for 208.

"They have worked really hard," he said. "What they really wanted to do was to retain this trophy," he said while congratulating Vere for a good game.

Eltham have now won nine titles in three years and eight of 10 in the past two seasons, most of which came at Melbourne.

Despite the loss, Vere's coach, Dewith Coleman, praised his boys' effort.

"It was our first outing in the final here, and I believe the boys did fairly well," Coleman said."We messed up yesterday (Thursday) in our bowling and fielding, but came back today and batted (well), lost some early wickets, but in the middle we stood up," he said. "There is something for us to be proud of."
