THE EDITOR, Sir:
RECENTLY, THE president/ chairman of the National Executive Transport Council expressed his disgust with the level of harassment coming from the police and the Transport Authority to the drivers of the 'Executive' bus system.
While most commuters and other road users may not be in a position to dispute or agree with the allegations, I believe that the operators, in particular the drivers, need to be regulated.
The accident on Mandela Highway on June 2 should be a warning to all persons with an interest in the operation of this organisation.
HEART ACHES FOR PEDESTRIANS
As a road user from the Portmore area, I get a double taste of the indiscipline every day and there are many times when you visualise an accident happening.
Sometimes you hear the drivers bragging of their manoeuvring skills. These drivers create roads in areas not intended for motor vehicles and many times end up in areas outside of their route because they want to 'cut-out' traffic. Oftentimes, my heart aches for the poor pedestrians on the sidewalk.
I would really appreciate if the management could strategically place some 'under-cover' officers along the Portmore Heart Academy, Edgewater, Port Henderson and the new toll road stretching to Marcus Garvey Drive. This would probably provide them with some answers to the alleged harassment that the drivers complain of.
I also believe that the commuters of Portmore, who use these buses, have a right to demand that the drivers abide by the road code or they (the commuters) should exercise other alternatives available to them.
I am, etc.,
