GREGG
CHAMPAGNE CORKS popped in Barbados last week as a contingent of Jamaicans celebrated Gary Gregg's victory in the two-day Barbados Tarmac Rally, which concluded in that country, last Sunday.
Gregg and his long time co-driver, Hugh Hutchinson, who survived a protest lodged against them, had to wait until Monday afternoon before it was officially announced that they were the winners.
"We went there prepared as best as we could. That is the event I have been preparing for. It is one of the better rallies that I have won," said Gregg.
The 40-year-old businessman who won the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) Driver's Championship last year, said the times were very fast and the event was highly competitive. He further said that between five to six stages had to be cancelled for different reasons.
Gregg and Hutchinson have become the second Jamaican team to win the Barbados Tarmac Rally. The team which returned to the island on Tuesday is now gearing up for JMMC local rallies.
"More than a decade ago Jeffrey Panton and John DeMercado won this event," said Errol Anderson, president of the JMMC, who was also in Barbados.
According to Anderson, Gregg's victory goes to show that not only are the Jamaica drivers driving well, but the mechanical crews are working and the cars are well prepared.
Two other Jamaicans, Rad Jadusingh and David Anderson, competed and finished 14th overall. Meanwhile Torique Minott teamed up with a Barbadian to finished 15th overall.
