Jamaican squad named
published: Wednesday | June 14, 2006

A SEVEN-MEMBER Jamaica boxing team was named by the Jamaica Boxing Association (JBA) for the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Championships (CABA) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, starting on June 26.

Last year's medallists, Nicholas Walters, Ricardo Smith and Gilbert Vaz, are back in the squad after last weekend's trials.

Walters comes out of Job's Gym in St. James, while welterweight Smith is from Hard Knocks Gym in Sav-la-Mar, and middleweight Vaz is of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Heavyweight Gerrington Richards and light heavyweight Everton Eccleston of the JDF complete the Open Class squad.

Camion Goldson, a welter-weight out of the Stanley Couch Gym, will compete in the Junior (Under-19) class while welter-weight Ricardo Brown of the JDF will be Jamaica's represen-tative in the Novice section.

The four officials who will accompany the team are coaches Ronaldo Castro and Kingsley Barrett, manager/delegate Leroy Brown and referee/judge Valery Murphy.

Colonel Ken Barnes, JBA president, said that while the team was relatively small due to financial constraints, it was strong on talent and he expects it to do as well as last year's seven-member team which came back from the 13-nation champion-ships with six medals.

The JBA is currently on a drive to raise the $500,000 needed for the trip.
