Jamaicans in top form
published: Wednesday | June 14, 2006

JAMAICANS CLORA Williams and Jovanee Jarrett, both former St. Jago students, were winners at the recent NCAA Division One Championships.

Williams won the 400 metres in 51.11 ahead of Kineke Alexander of Iowa ( 51.35) and third-place finisher Shana Cox of Penn State (51.39) while former Vere student Patricia Hall of Tennessee (41.45) was fourth.

Jarrett, representing Auburn, took the women's long jump with a leap of 6.46m to beat Patty Sylvester of Georgia (6.41m).

Meanwhile, Kerron Stewart and Ricardo Chambers were equally impressive in finishing second in their events.

IMPRESSIVE

In the men's 400m, Florida State's Chambers took second place in an impressive 44.71, beaten by LSU's Xavier Carter (44.53).

Stewart nearly won the sprint double by finishing the 100m in 11.36 seconds behind South Carolina's Amberly Nesbitt (11.34) and the 200m in 22.65 behind South Carolina's Shalonda Solomon (22.62).

Stewart was happy with her performances. "It was lots of hard work. Right now I just feel complete. It was lots of hard work and frustration, but it paid off," she said.

Stewart said she wasn't 100 per cent fit, but "I am a competitor so no matter the circumstances, I am going to compete."

MelaineWalker ran a lifetime best 12.75 seconds to finish third in the 100m hurdles behind Southern California's Virginia Powell who set a world-leading 12.48.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Bryan Steele of Long Island (49.02) finished second while LSU's Isa Phillips, a former Jamaican junior, was sixth in 49.51.

Jamaican junior record holder Zara Northover of Northeastern (15.44m) was eighth in the women's shot put.
