LETTER OF THE DAY - Dismay about drainage delays
published: Friday | June 16, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a concerned youngster who is well aware that natural disasters are no respecter of age, gender or class; but being prepared can help save property, life and pride.

The years have come and the years have gone and yet still the age-old problem still exists for our country and this is the lack of a proper drainage system. The Government is setting a very good example for us youths, when they procrastinate. They have refused to attend to the drains during the good weather that we had earlier during the year, and now the bickering has begun.

The drains were there in the Christmas season; the drains were there in the new year; the drains were there during the Easter break; and they were there during the Labour Day holidays and yet they weren't cleaned. Now, they are talking about the drains and how great a damage it would cause if they are not cleaned before the hurricanes or even the tropical storms come. Now I have to wonder, is the Government's priority to build stylish roads but no drains to accommodate them?

They are concerned about how much money it would cost if they were to clean the drains, why don't they become aware and concerned about how much it will cost to clean up after a flood, which by the state of our poor drainage systems, can be triggered off by the slightest amount of rainfall? This leads me to think that we are advancing in technology, but regressing in intelligence.

DRAIN ASSIGNMENT

What the Government needs to do is to assign persons to a certain number of drains in their community to ensure that drains are kept clean.

Jamaica is known for violence, human trafficking and more recently for pirating. We are also known to be the sprint factory of the world. We could soon be known as the best "drained" country of the world.

I am, etc.,

NICHOLAS MORGAN

James Hill, Clarendon
