Skewed idea of effectual governance
published: Sunday | June 18, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEOPLE FROM civilised countries must be shaking their heads in consternation at our inability to comprehend the reasons why it was imprudent to reinstate SSP Adams to the police force, and why the modus operandi of the Crime Management Unit could not, in the long run, have been an effective measure in controlling crime.

In Jamaica, we seem to have a skewed concept of what comprises effectual governance. We tend to plan short-term projects in areas where constant maintenance is needed, and then only for special occasions like Royal visits or World Cup cricket. So we shouldn't be expected to scratch beneath the surface of the acquittal of SSP Adams and his Merry Men to make the decision for reinstatement.

The tragedy is that there is far more public outcry against the revoking of theentry visas, than there was for even the little girl permanently scarred by the executions at Crawle.

Our priorities, too, are askew. The world, I am sure, is watching.

I am, etc.,
