'Prime Minister of Jamaica could announce election date by September'
published: Monday | June 19, 2006

Byron McDaniel, Gleaner Writer

WALDERSTON, Manchester:

PEOPLE'S NATIONAL Party (PNP) Chairman, Robert Pickersgill, says Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller could announce the date for the next general election before the party's annual conference in September.

Against this background, he says party supporters should ensure that they are prepared for a general election.

Mr. Pickersgill was addressing PNP supporters at a meeting in Sanguenetti Clarendon on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pickersgill is again rejecting claims of disunity in the PNP.

He says since Mrs. Simpson Miller has been elected party president, an overwhelming number of persons have indicated their desire to become political representatives.

According to Mr. Pickersgill, in some cases, as many as five potential candidates have expressed a desire to be selected as constituency representative for the PNP. This he added was due to the love for Mrs. Simpson Miller.

In the meantime Mr. Pickersgill who is also the Minister of Housing Transport, Water and Works said soon the country would see billions of dollars being spent to develop roads and houses.

He added that thousands of Jamaicans including women would be assisted to start their own businesses.

Richard Azan, Member of Parliament for North West Clarendon who was also at the meeting disclosed that the Spalding Transport Centre will be completed next month.

Mr. Azan said the transport centre will be named in honour of former Councillor for the Spalding Division and Mayor of May Pen, Minnie Clarke.
