WALDERSTON, Manchester:
PRINCIPAL OF the Mizpah All-age School in Manchester, Doreen Spence has been lauded for bringing the school from the brink of closure with only50 students on role to 325 during her nine year tenure.
According to Minister of Education and Youth Maxine Henry-Wilson, the attainment of this lead educator must be celebrated.
"You (Mrs. Spence) have many more years left in you and I hope you have created other leaders who will take over from you," she said.
Mrs. Henry-Wilson was speaking last week at a special ceremony to mark the official opening of two new buildings at the school and the commissioning of traffic lights near the institution.
She also suggested that Mrs. Spence who will soon go on pre-retirement leave will be given other educational responsibilities.
"This is just a little break for you to come back and work with some more schools in Manchester and elsewhere, to bring them up to the standard of Mizpah," said the Education Minister.
Mrs. Spence who holds a Bachelor of Education Degree (with honours) from the University of the West Indies, is married to Travert Spence, the principal of Bethabara All Age School in Manchester.
Mr. Spence is also a former president of the Manchester Principals' Association.
