LETTER OF THE DAY - The PM must strive for a gender balance
published: Tuesday | June 20, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE listened with great interest to the honourable Portia Simpson Miller talk about helping other females to kick the glass ceiling open, but I shiver at the fact that statistics reveal that males are the main deviants in this society. With this new thrust of women breaking the glass ceiling, males will become more at risk of being marginalised thus increasing the demonisation of our country.

The Prime Minister seems to be on a campaign to align herself with the females in the society, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to gain their sympathy and to increase her votes. We must not be caught in this frenzy, but focus on the real issues at hand.

After 17 years of being a part of an administration that did not deliver 'change', why should the nation believe that one person in the form of the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller can deliver this change? We must ask ourselves, are the policies different? Is there anything being done differently now when compared to the P.J. Patterson administration, or is it a mere change in the presentation, personality and flare of the individual at the helm?

MORE WOMEN THAN MEN CAN VOTE

What we know for sure is that there are more women with voting rights than males, hence the Prime Minister's scheme is a good one to win the hearts of the masses - winning the fifth term in office.

Women must be encouraged to act responsibly and not use this opportunity to beat up on men. I have listened to women who have expressed joy at having a female Prime Minister, who in their opinion can fulfil the countless expectations. She will be more forceful devising schemes in controlling the "wutless men who won't mind dem pickney". She will provide them with welfare benefits similar to that of the first world countries and the list goes on.

EXTINCT/ENDANGERED SPECIES

With this new thrust, the male species sees itself becoming extinct/endangered if this wave continues to swirl at them. Males have become hopelessly marginalised and this frenzy that has surfaced can lead to the further haemorrhaging of the society. According to Psalms, 8 verse 5 "thou hast made him a little lower than the angels."

The Prime Minister must strike a balance in society and not be drawn to any one particular gender, for it is her new found faith in God that emphasised the need for 'anyone that ruleth over men to be just" 2 Samuel 23 verse 3.

Finally, "It is because nations tend to stupidity and baseness that mankind moves so slowly' it is because individuals have a capacity for better things that it moves at all." (George Gissing 1857-1903)

Let us realise that Jamaica is in our hands and it is ours for the making.

I am, etc.
