BY UNANIMOUS decision, Jamaica was chosen to chair the Technical Standing Working Group of the Caribbean Memorandum of Understanding on port state control (CMoU) at the recently concluded meeting in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Technical Working Group is responsible for developing technical requirements governing the port state control regime of the region. This ensures uniformity across the region while offering guidelines to port state control officers who are responsible for inspecting vessels calling at their respective ports.

The CMoU is a maritime agreement governing port state control within the Caribbean. Under this regime all members are obligated to inspect a minimum of 15 per cent of foreign vessels calling at their ports. This regime was developed in order to ensure that vessels trading in Caribbean waters comply with international maritime standards of safety, security and marine pollution prevention.

This will be Jamaica's second consecutive term as chair of this the most important sub-committee of the CMoU. Chief Engineer George Lovemore, who is senior marine surveyor at the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, will be taking the reins formerly held by Captain Lennox Bailey, also of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica.
