CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC)
Jamaica beat Barbados on a faster run-rate to secure their second concesutive win in a rain-affect game as rain ruined the third round of the 2006 West Indies Women's regional cricket championships yesterday.
Jamaica, after losing to Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day, rebounded to score a four-wicket victory over Grenada on Sunday.
Persistent rainfall ensured that St. Lucia's clash with St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the Philip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort and Trinidad and Tobago's match against Grenada at the Mindoo Philip Park were rained out without a ball being bowled.
In a match reduced to 45 overs at the Beausejour Ground, however, Barbados scored 130 in 44 overs after they won the toss and chose to bat.
Michelle Ellis was the chief run scorer with 35, while all-rounder Pamela Lavine and Deandra Dottin both chipped in with 15.
Chadean Nation caused trouble while claiming four for 25 and got valuable support from Patrice Cuffe with three for 27. When Jamaica replied they were 112 for four during the 31st over when bad light, then rain, stopped play late in the evening.
Fifteen-year-old opener, Step-hanie Taylor was the top-scorer for Jamaica, striking four fours during a delightful, undefeated knock of 70.
Nikesha Francis contributed 19 while the consistent Pamela Lavine claimed three for 19 to lead the bowling for Barbados.
"We are right on track and the tournament is where we wanted it," Jamaican coach, Cleon Smith told CMC Sports yesterday. "We should have been three-up today but too many wides against Trinidad and Tobago cost us that match. The team is very confident right now."
Today is a rest day in the tournament.
