For the sake of Jamaica
published: Wednesday | June 21, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RIGHT AFTER America invaded Afghanistan and liberated it from the Taliban, a doctor of Afghan descent went back to his old country, and when he saw what had become of his beautiful country, he just could not believe it; he fell to his knees and cried (he had left during the time the Russians invaded).

Whenever I remember that picture, I always think of my beautiful Jamaica and what I have heard so many people say about it, that there is too much killing and that they will never go back. My only response to them is that I will not allow anyone to chase me away from Jamaica. If good people stay away from Jamaica and turn it over to the criminal elements, then in the end we will have only ourselves to blame.

The Diaspora Conference was very encouraging. Jamaicans need to realise that Jamaicans at home and Jamaicans abroad are one and the same. We are no different and neither one is better than the other. One of the things we need to realise is that there are more Jamaicans living abroad than there are living in Jamaica (500,000 alone in the New York City area).

Jamaicans abroad desperately want to be involved in the growth and development of Jamaica, and both the diaspora and Jamaicans at home will find a way to get that done. Remember what we were all taught as children, 'Out Of Many, One People'.

Jamaica is always in our hearts and in our prayers. God bless Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
