Charles Town Maroons celebrate Quao Day
published: Friday | June 23, 2006

THE CHARLES Town Maroons in Portland will celebrate the annual Quao Day today at the Saffu Yard in the community.

The celebrations will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be highlighted by the official launching of the Jerk Trail, which is an initiative introduced by Unique Jamaica in collaboration with the Jamaica Tourist Board, to promote jerking throughout Jamaica.

Accompong in St. Elizabeth, Boston and Charles Town in Portland and Walkers Wood in St. Ann are the principal designated jerk centres of the trail.

Quao Day is celebrated by the Charles Town Maroons in memory of Captain Quao, the Maroon leader and military strategist who, along with National Heroine Nanny, led the Windward Maroons in victory over the British troops in 1739. This brought about the signing of the peace treaty between those Maroons and the British Government.
