National Water Commission (NWC) strike ends
published: Friday | June 23, 2006

THE STRIKE action taken by workers of the National Water Commission (NWC) since Tuesday came to an end yesterday after a 15-hour meeting between the company's management, the Finance Ministry and four trade unions representing the employees.

The unions agreed to instruct the workers to resume work starting with the first shift yesterday.

A statement released by the Ministry of Labour said the NWC agreed to implement in full the findings of a salary survey conducted by the commission. The implementation schedule will be subject to negotiation.

The parties further agreed to continue negotiations on wages and fringe benefits for 2006 on June 27.

The strike action taken by the NWC workers, who were registering their dissatisfaction over protracted wage negotiations, led to chaos in several communities across the island. The situation was especially bad in St. Catherine, as many residents of Portmore and Spanish Town were forced to walk for miles with buckets and other containers in search of the precious commodity.
