Percy Sledge

THERE WILL be more to this weekend than choking on popcorn and beer as you watch the exciting World Cup games.

Those who love the sweet country air can pack their kids into the family car and head for Community Connect 2006 being hosted by the Grange Hill Development Area Committee. Share with the community in a celebration of food, sports, culture and music. The festivities happen tomorrow at the Frome Sports Complex in the parish commencing at 10:00 a.m. Admission: Adults $100, Children $50.

National Champs

Alternatively, you could head to the National Stadium to see 100m co-world record-holder Asafa Powell and other leading Jamaican track stars this weekend.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association in association with Supreme Ventures Limited is hosting the National Junior and Senior Championships that started yesterday at the stadium. The championships conclude tomorrow deciding Jamaica's team for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Colombia, July 25-29, and the participants for other upcoming events. The championships begin at 4:00 p.m. Admission $800, children $400 for grandstand only.

Percy Sledge is here

For those inclined to hearing love songs, 'An Evening with Percy Sledge' should be a must for this weekend. The Love God, Percy Sledge, will be joined by George Nooks, Nadine Sutherland, Frankie Paul, Fab Five and others. The event takes place tomorrow evening at the Cable and Wireless Golf Academy, New Kingston. Admission $2,000 pre-sold, $2,500 at the gate.
