Five to receive honorary degrees at UWI graduation

FIVE EMINENT persons, including two Jamaicans, are to receive honorary degrees at the two graduation ceremonies to held in November on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.

The two Jamaicans are Roman Catholic priest Father Richard Ho Lung and Colonel Collin L.G. Harris of the Moore Town Maroons.

The other honourees are Justice Dr. L. Dolliver Nelson, former Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea; anthropologist, Professor Sydney Mintz and Belizean Governor General Sir Colville N. Young.

Colonel Harris will be conferred with the Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree. He has had a distinguished career as a leader of a traditional Maroon community. n 1972 he was instrumental in getting the Jamaican Government to recognise and elevate Nanny to the rank of National Hero.

Catholic priest, Father Ho Lung is best known for his work with the homeless and indigent through the Missionaries of the Poor. He is also known for his highly successful musical compositions which have helped to advance his outreach work. He will also be conferred with a Doctor of Laws degree.

GRENADIAN HONOURED

A similar degree will be conferred on Grenadian national, Justice Dr. Nelson, who held the office of vice-president of the law of the Sea Tribunal from 1999 and served as President from 2002 until his retirement in September 2005.

American professor Sydney Mintz will also be conferred with the Doctor of Laws degree. An anthropologist, Professor Mintz has devoted his life to research on societies of the Caribbean.

And Belizean Governor General, Sir Colville, is described as an educator, author, a linguist, lyricist and composer. He was the first President of the University College of Belize in 1986. He will receive the same degree.
