PARLIAMENT HAS approved Contractor-General, Greg Christie's proposal for the legislature to provide him with information, which would facilitate the monitoring of any future government contract where a Member of Parliament expresses a desire to become an interested party.
The Office of the Contractor-General disclosed on Thursday that the Speaker of the House of Representatives had positively responded to the proposal Christie put forward in January of this year.
"In a letter which was dated June 20, 2006, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, ... Michael Peart ... has assured me that Parliament will in the future provide me with the details which I have requested regarding these contracts," Mr. Christie said.
GREATER PUBLIC CONFIDENCE
This nod from Parliament has given the Office of the Contractor-General unprece-dented privilege. Earlier this year, Mr. Christie, in what he described as a bid to promote greater transparency and public confidence in the Government contracts award and procurement process, announced his intention to commence the routine monitoring of all government contracts in which Members of Parliament, their spouses, parents, children and siblings, are interested parties.
