Is JLP reviving the Cold War?
published: Sunday | June 25, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE RECENT rumblings from Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Bruce Golding and its spokesman Karl Samuda about Jamaica's foreign policy is cause for great concern. I have not heard the Government make any pronouncements that they are supporting Hugo Chavez of Venezuela or that they are against President Bush and the United States.

The question, therefore, is, what is the JLP's motive for raising those alarm bells? It seems evident to me that the JLP is trying to seek sympathy from the United States and to get them involved in our internal affairs and possibly help to determine the results of any upcoming elections.

The JLP's attempt to revive the Cold War should be soundly rejected. Bruce Golding and Karl Samuda should never be allowed to divide us again. They should spend their time trying to influence the United States Ambassador to help us access the $490,000,000 that she says the U.S. has for us "if we do some things right." What are those things?

Chavez has put his oil where his mouth is. The U.S. needs to follow suit and put its money where its mouth is.

I am, etc.,
