View on the referendum
published: Monday | June 26, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN THE Letter of the Day, 22 June 2006 from Wilbert A. Witter, he suggested the combining of National and Local elections and adding a section for Referendum questions, this section to be detached and completed by voters and returned by mail at a later date.

The letter makes excellent suggestions, except that if the voter is allowed to leave with the Referendum section to be submitted later, in many cases it would not be submitted or sent in very late.

SUGGESTION

Instead, I suggest that some responsible independent people be on duty to help with the completion of the form and have it submitted immediately. The low level of literacy of many would create difficulty for those reading and comprehending the questions and writing in the answers.

The Referendum section might also create an incentive for more people to come out and vote, as they could feel that they were given a chance to put forward their opinions on major issues.

I am, etc.,
