Brother, sister arrested on kidnapping suspicion
published: Monday | June 26, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN:

FOLLOWING THE June 18 kidnapping of an eight-year-old boy, a brother-sister team has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the act. Their arrest came after residents of the Old Harbour Glades area in St. Catherine, blocked the Old Harbour main road in the vicinity of the police station on June 24, to protest what they claim was the slow pace of the investigation.

FED UP

The Gleaner learnt that eight-year-old Anthony Evans was taken to visit the brother and sister's house in Old Harbour Glades. The mother left and returned later but the child was not seen. She made enquiries and didn't get any satisfactory answer. She subsequently reported the matter to the Old Harbour police who failed to offer any assistance in locating the child. As a result the residents became fed up.

One of the demonstrators told The Gleaner that someone from the household where the child was taken has since gone missing. "Is a cover-up, because a woman who was there when di pickney go up deh gone missing and the police dem know bout it."

ROADBLOCK CLEARED

The placard-bearing residents were addressed by Deputy Superintendent Karl Ferguson of the Old Harbour Police Station and they cleared the road after the suspects whose names have been withheld, were taken into custody.

Supt. Ferguson told The Gleaner that the police are not dragging their feet but are in process of collecting statements. "At no time do we intend to drag our feet, and a thorough investigation will be conducted. In the meantime, the two suspects will remain in custody."

The child has still not been found.
