Tired of the corruption
published: Tuesday | June 27, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM utterly disgusted about the many reported cases of corruption, overruns, pilferage and unauthorised use of public funds. This nonsense is going on for far too long and no one seems to care enough to put a stop to this thievery and corrupt practices.

We have a nation that is bursting at the seams with poverty. High cost of living is stifling economic growth, life has become a living nightmare for the poor and downtrodden, children are forced to skip school and many go to bed without a morsel of food while employees of the state, the people their tax dollars provide with a salary only wine, dine and live high off the hog, all at the nation's expense.

These government and public sector employees all earn decent salaries so why can't they be made to pay their way just like the rest of us.

People get free houses, equipment with staff, car and upkeep for both, they travel the world, wine, dine and entertain at the expense of a suffering and malnourished taxpayer; they get credit cards too
to spend on their worldly pleasures.

I understand that there are some inescapable expenses on the part of Government and its employees, but why can't people be made to pay their own rent and living expenses like the rest of the world?

I am, etc.,
