ANTIGUA: Opposition snubs efforts to debate new tax measure
published: Thursday | June 29, 2006

BIRD

ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA, (CMC):

The main opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) says it will not participate in efforts by the Government to discuss the proposed sales tax that is due to be implemented later this year.

"We are going to take some very strong measures on this matter of the position of the parliamentarians, as opposed to what is the position of the party," ALP leader Lester Bird said in a statement.

A parliamentary select committee, chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Errol Cort, has been established to study the tax measure, but Bird said the proposed tax would increase costs for the entire population, further increasing the cost of living.
