Alleged 'kidnap victim' on conspiracy charge
published: Thursday | June 29, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

A TEENAGED girl and two men, who allegedly conspired to defraud her mother of $8 million by staging her kidnapping, pleaded not guilty to the charge in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The 17-year-old university student and her co-accused, 21-year-old Patrick Hunter, both of St. James addresses, and 25-year-old Orett Salmon of Green Island, Hanover, were ordered to surrender their travel documents.

RM Winsome Henry also imposed a stop order at the island's ports against the trio.

The girl and Hunter, who were given station bail in the sum of $250,000, are required to report to the St. James Divisional Headquarters on Tuesdays and Fridays. Salmon, on a $200,000 bail bond, will report to the Green Island Police Station on the same days.

They are scheduled to return to court on August 17 when the case is set for mention, as the file is incomplete.

LEFT FOR MONTEGO BAY

The court was told that, on the morning of June 20, the teen left her mother's home in Irwin to go into Montego Bay. Allegations are about 4:57 p.m. on the same day in question, the mother received a call from her daughter's cellphone. It is said that when she answered a man responded.

It is also alleged that the male caller told her that he had her daughter and demanded $8 million for her release. This was reported to the police. Investigators later arrested the three.
