THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to reply to the comments made by Trevor Radway to the effect that Chavez is better for Jaamica than the United States I agree in some aspects with what Mr. Radway has said, in so much that Jamaica needs to be open to opportunities that are presented to them. Additionally, I agree that relations with the USA (and United Nations) sometimes come at great sacrifice. Such is the case with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, as they usually impose such stringent terms that they are bittersweet at best.
I strongly disagree about Jamaica needing a Castro or Chavez. While some of their goals and achievements may be noteworthy, the process and resulting atrocities in these countries are appalling. While I have never been to Cuba, I have heard firsthand the stories from some of their people that I have met over the years. I have lived in Venezuela for quite a few years and have witnessed that crime and drugs are rampant.
Mr. Chavez may eventually succeed in accomplishing his goals, which I commend, but they are at a great cost to the people, as the country is divided - rich vs. poor. I personally feel that he should have worked more with the rich, weaning them off of their selfish ways, while fostering a plan that would allow the people to live together. Hopefully, the poor will overcome as Mr. Chavez has spent an 'enormous' amount of money on homes and schools. I wish the best for Venezuela, as I have two young children living there.
I am, etc.,
