CHRISTMAS HAS come early this year for Maxfield Park Children's Home, which got a commitment from Government that it would be providing two state-of-the-art computers, a donation of $45,000 and a mentorship programme.
Senator Kern Spencer, State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, gave the com-mitment while addressing the home's open day exhibition Wednesday in Kingston.
Senator Spencer said the computers would be donated to the home's computer lab. He also pledged $10,000 to the institution's agricultural programme and $35,000 to the poultry project.
The State Minister said the Technology Ministry would be liaising with the business community to put in place a mentorship programme for the home. He also announced that he would be adopting one of the hostels at the home.
"I am going to make the first move and demonstrate to the rest of the country that we need to play a part in children's homes by adopting one of the hostels this morning," Senator Spencer said.
Roxiline Morrison-Spence, superintendent of the Maxfield Park home, welcomed the commitment. "We are overwhelmed. This is an extremely useful gift in that they will fuel and develop the programmes that we are currently trying to handle, It is a lot of creativity and lot of manoeuvring to keep this programme going so with those inputs we will be much more able to deal with it professionally and effectively."
