KENDESE NANGLE continued to be one of Jamaica's top performers at the 16th Caribbean Island Swimming Championships (CISC) in Puerto Rico after she shattered the girls' 11-12 50-metre breaststroke record on Wednesday night.
Nangle hit the wall in 32.61 seconds, almost one full second ahead of Nishani Cicilson's 2004 record. The Netherland Antilles' Karline Theodora (33.52) was second after she also went below the Surinamese's old mark of 33.58.
Nangle's gold-medal winning performance capped off a good day for the Jamaicans who took their medal tally to 16. The day also saw Jamaica maintain their fifth placed position, climbing to 193 points but being followed closely by the Netherlands Antilles on 183.
Puerto Rico continue to dominate the meet, racking up 968.5 points to hold a commanding lead over Trinidad and Tobago with 600. The Bahamas are in third with 446.5 points followed by the Dominican Republic who have 242.
GOOD FORM
Jamaica's Brad Hamilton was also in good form on Wednesday as he added two medals to his tally. He was second in the boys' 15-17 50m freestyle in 24.32 behind the Netherlands Antilles' Rodion Davelaar (24.30) and ahead of the Bahamas' Vereance Burrows (24.39). Jamaican Travis Forte was fourth in that race.
Hamilton (2:06.72) wasn't done for the day, as he returned to win the 200m butterfly ahead of the Dominican Republic's Ronnie Benjamin (2:08.77) and Puerto Rico's Harold Rivera (2:12.27). Forte was again just out of medal contention.
Ramon Walton was second in the 13-14 200m butterfly, hitting the wall in 2:19.38. He was beaten by Puerto Rico's Christian Bayo (2:17.76) and finished ahead of Suriname's Said Sowma (2:22.38). Dominic Walter was sixth.
David Bromfield (33.12) claimed Jamaica's final medal of the day after he was third in the 11-12 50m backstroke behind Puerto Rico's Javier Solivan (32.73) and Suriname's Glenn Gemerts (32.80).
At press time last night, the Jamaicans had qualified for six finals on the penultimate day of competition.
Dominic Walter was in the final of the 13-14 400m freestyle, Dominic Lee was in the final of Boys 18 and over 50m breaststroke, Hamilton had made the final of the 50m breaststroke, Bromfield had tagged the last spot in the 11-12 50m event, Ramon Walton was in the final of the 13-14 200m backstroke and Nangle was again in the thick of things in the 200m backstroke.
