Long arm of the law - J'can gangster caught in US
published: Sunday | July 2, 2006

Glenroy Sinclair and Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writers

A WEALTHY, notorious west Kingston gangster who was chased out of the Matthews Lane community by convicted killer, Donald 'Zekes' Phipps, has been busted in a massive ammunition find in the United States.

Reports reaching The Sunday Gleaner are that last Wednesday law enforcement agents swooped down on a house in Miami, where the Jamaican was found, along with a large quantity of ammunition.

It is alleged that the Jamaican had been recently shot and injured by rival gangsters in New York and had gone to Miami to recuperate. A high-ranking member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force said the local police have received some intelligence on the matter and are now awaiting a formal report from their overseas colleagues.

Operation Kingfish, along with its counterparts in the United Kingdom and the United States have been busy targeting the empire of drug lords.

POLICE FINDS LEAD IN HEWITT'S MURDER CASE

Meantime, the St. Catherine police have discovered a bloody shirt perceived to be the one worn by the person responsible for the murder of popular dancehall promoter and public relations practitioner, Christine Hewitt.

The Police disclosed that the bloody shirt was found yesterday afternoon on the Duval Main Road near Bog Walk in St. Catherine. Investigators are currently searching for more clues.

The bloody shirt, which could prove to be a primary piece of evidence in the cracking of the high-profile murder case, was found after a meeting yesterday morning between Denver Frater, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Crime in Area Five and several investigators in Spanish Town.

The Police, who are optimistic that they would solve the case, have revealed that the public has been co-operative thus far in providing investigators with information. The lawmen are urging the public to continue to lend their support to the investigations.

At the same time, the Police disclosed that Ms Hewitt's husband, who was questioned and released on Friday, was not an immediate suspect.

"We heard that another vehicle was travelling behind the burnt out Hiace that her remains were found in, and would be thankful if persons in the Bog Walk, Riversdale and other areas would assist us with information," appealed Inspector Steve Brown, CCN Metro Officer yesterday. He invited persons who wished to help with the investigation to call KingFish at 811 or 119.

Last Thursday about 6:45 p.m. the lifeless body of Ms. Hewitt, who was also an aspiring politician, entertainer and talk show host, was discovered in a burnt out Hiace bus that was found along the Mount Industry main road in St. Catherine. Several persons are still in shock following the gruesome discovery.
