Tourism sector to discuss AIDS policy

ALOUN ASSAMBA, Minister of Tourism, Entertainment and Culture, said last week that consultation with stakeholders in the sector should begin in the upcoming quarter for the purpose of putting in place a national workplace policy on HIV/AIDS.

Minister Assamba said that the consultation would begin shortly after the Ministry of Health approved the final draft of the policy.

"Mr. Speaker, in pursuance of the tenant of inclusiveness under the Tourism Master Plan, my ministry has been actively engaged in the marketing of health and the physical well being of the tourism sector's human resources," she said, while making her presentation in the Sectoral Debate in Gordon House on Wednesday.

A WORKPLACE POLICY

"We are focused on the development of a workplace policy on HIV/AIDS, specifically for the tourism industry. The goal is to assist in the prevention and reduction of HIV/AIDS transmission within the formal and informal sub-sectors," she said.

Meanwhile, she said the Tourism Product Development Company had been proactive with several targeted interventions. on the ground. Among them was the strategic placement of condom machines in hotels for use by guests and staff. She said some 17 machines were in some eight hotels.

There have been 27 HIV/AIDS sensitisation and awareness sessions across the island targeting line staff.
