Toll road concerns
published: Sunday | July 2, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a young person living in Portmore and have three concerns.

I cannot afford a car in the near future and sometimes travel to Kingston on the JUTC buses and whenever I cannot find the fare, I ride my bicycle to and from work.

The bus toll fee will be $236, and if the bus carries 100 passengers, then one would expect to pay $2.36 extra per passenger.

My concern is that they may want to charge up to 10 times more than the cost and there is no reason for Ezroy Millwood to suggest that the executive buses may have to be removed. He will only have to be fair and charge the extra $5 or $10.

There is more than space to mark bicycle lanes as I hear is done in European countries and some American cities. I do not think it's too late to mark these bicycle lanes on the sides of the toll road.

The majority of us poor, young persons, helpers, clerks and factory workers living in Portmore commute by bus and bicycles.

But whenever we attend a meeting, it's pure chaos and shouting and we are never able to voice our opinion, since the rich car drivers are always hogging the mike, and insulting everybody from mayor to ministers to government.

My colleagues and I have decided never to attend any more meetings.

I would love to see the bicycle and bus issues addressed, since it is too long to ride the Mandela Highway.

I am, etc.,

JOHN QUARRIE
