THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTE Senior Superintendent Ealan Powell's address to the Road Safety Council with regards to cars that are modified. The same is causing most of the accidents on our roads because of their enhanced speed. While that might be true to some extent, I cannot agree wholeheartedly.
The problem lies with how the roads are built. The days of one-lane traffic should be done away with and let us start looking at converting all major roadways into dual carriageways. So while speeding might be the first part of the problem, the second part lies with overtaking and being confronted with oncoming vehicles.
Check the statistics and we will find that most of our fatal accidents are caused from head-on collisions. While I am not advocating speed, I do believe it should be kept in check. However, if one driver feels as though he or she wants to move faster than the person ahead, within the ambit of the speed limit, they should be able to do so without the fear of oncoming vehicles.
The largest growth that we have experienced in Jamaica within the last 10 years is motor vehicular, so I think that while we are building roads, we should look more carefully at how we build them. Let us build them so they will enhance our driving experience, not bring us to our death.
I am, etc.,
